Hybrid cars (and trucks now!) are vehicles that use a new kind of propulsion technology to save gas. Basically a hybrid combines the convenience of a traditional gasoline engine with the incredible efficiency that an electrically powered engine provides.
Basically a hybrid car runs off of its batteries. Those batteries store energy and use it to propel the car. The car replenishes this energy primarily by using a small, high-efficiency gasoline engine that runs only when needed to replenish the batteries. Hybrid cars also typically use "regenerative braking" to capture energy that is normally used when a vehicle is braking. In a "normal" vehicle this energy is just turned into heat by the brake pads and is lost - a hybrid recovers this energy to replenish batteries.
This means that unlike a fully electric car, hybrids can make use of the extensive network of gasoline stations that already exists - you'll never be stuck on the road with a means to refill your car - but at the same time you have far, far better mileage than a traditional gasoline powered vehicle.
